4. SPONSORING AND INVESTING
UNNAMED FEATURE
The motion-picture industry's overall monetary worth continues to grow steadily with each succeeding year.  Worldwide theatrical box office receipts presently (2004) add up to over US$22 billion annually.
According to reports in Variety Reporter and Hollywood Daily, world totals are expected to exceed US$30 billion by the end of the next decade. In addition to theatrical revenues the revenues from cable television is almost about US$40 billion annually and home video (VHS and DVD) sales and rentals a staggering US$24 billion annually.
A loose summary of these present-day (2004) figures is impressive:
Entertainment Category
Annual Revenue (US$)
Theatrical
$22billion
Cable TV
$40 billion
Home Videos
$24 billion
TOTAL
$86 billion

Aside from the enormous revenues, motion pictures have a very high influencing factor on fashion, trends, and political persuasion (rightly or wrongly). Motion pictures last long after the magazines and newspapers expire. The life of a motion picture can be timeless. Cast your mind on some of the great classics such as 'Citizen Kane', 'Casablanca', 'Gone with the Wind', and 'The Godfather'.  Others such as 'Star Wars', 'Raiders of the Lost Ark', 'The Titanic', and 'The Lord of the Rings' reaped phenomenal profits and earned a place as some of the best movies ever made.
